Skin Needling at Home – Is It Right For You?
What is Skin Needling?
Skin needling, or microneedling was originally pioneered by a renowned South African Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Desmond Fernandes. The idea for this therapy is to stimulate your own skin cell regeneration and collagen production. It can be performed by a professional, or in the privacy of your own home.
The needle lengths on the rollers used by professionals are much longer and can cause bleeding and some discomfort. However, a numbing cream is usually applied before treatment. And while this intense treatment does offer significant results — it also requires about four to seven days downtime to heal. In my opinion, this is a much faster and safer alternative to laser therapy.
Skin needling with a skin roller produces hundreds of tiny dermal injuries. Each dermal injury triggers the body’s natural wound healing response within the skin, producing and depositing new collagen in the treatment area. Each successive treatment triggers the production and deposition of new collagen that progressively fills in depressed scars and deep lines. This infilling process can continue for up to 12 months after a treatment has been performed.
What can Skin Needling treat?
- Restores firmness and tightness to flaccid skin
- Thickens the epidermis and enhances dermal compactness
- Helps to smooth away wrinkles, lines, folds and crow’s feet
- Improves skin texture
- Improves large pores in facial skin
- Reduces the appearance of indented acne scars
- Improves scars caused by chicken pox
- Helps to fill old surgical scars
- Helps to lighten pigmentation marks
- Dramatically increases absorption of active ingredients
- Dramatically increases the efficacy of topical skincare products
- Improves the appearance of stretch marks from pregnancy or weight loss
- Improves the appearance of cellulite
Skin Needling can treat sensitive areas that other treatments have to avoid, such as below the eyes, the neck and the back of hands.
Do Skin Rollers Really Work?
Skin Rollers are supported by clinical studies to be effective in non-surgical and non-ablative treatment for a variety of skin conditions. These include aging, (wrinkles, fine lines, and stretch marks), scarring (acne and breast augmentation), as well as cellulite and hyperpigmentation.
Studies have also shown that skin, or face rollers are oftentimes a better treatment than dermabrasion, chemical peels, and laser resurfacing. They are proven to be just effective in their ability to stimulate collagen and elastin production. Regular use of skin roller can thicken skin, smooth scars of all sizes, and erase wrinkles.

Choosing the right size needle
There are now a number of skin rollers available for home use and they come in many different needle lengths, needle diameters and needle numbers, which can make it very confusing for their users.
In order to rejuvenate the derma, roller needles will penetrate the upper layer of skin, which temporarily opens the pores. This process will stimulate collagen and also allow your skincare products to penetrate deeper into the skin.
| Needle Length | Uses |
| 0.25mm | Increased penetration of skin care products into the skin and overall improvement of skin color and texture. |
| 0.5mm | Wrinkles, anti-aging, light acne scarring, mild chicken pox or ice pick scars, also recommended for thinning hair. |
| 1.0mm, 1.5mm | Deep stretch marks, cellulite and deep scarring — 1.5mm is also the maximum needle length recommended for use on your face |
